Dear Reader,
I’ve been thinking about two people I met this weekend, and smiling.
On Saturday, I met June, who guessed so many of the books just from their clue cards. She was good! We traded recommendations and talked for quite a while about why we love to read. Sometimes we want an escape. Sometimes we want a book that challenges us or helps us understand someone else a little better. We had plenty to talk about.
On Sunday, a young reader and I discovered our shared love of Scooby-Doo. At one point, we were singing and dancing to the Hex Girls. I did not have that on my weekend bingo card, but I’m glad it happened.
We also discovered that we both mark our favorite passages and quotes in books so we can find them again. When something really speaks to you, you want to be able to come back to it.
I love that both conversations started with books and went from there. Recommendations, favorite quotes, a little singing and dancing. I’m so glad I got to meet them both.
What are you in the mood to read?
An escape? A good scare? Something you’ll want to underline? After all that book talk this weekend, I have a few reading ideas for you.
For when you want an escape
Free Falling by Lyla Sage
Sometimes you just want to get caught up in someone else’s love story. A little yearning, a little mystery, a few shenanigans. If that sounds like your kind of reading night, this one might be calling your name.
For when you want to leave the lights on
Solace House by Will MacLean
Locked rooms, secret passageways, and scratched-out photographs? Well, now I have questions. If your idea of a good October night involves a creepy story and staying up a little too late, this one might be for you. I’d keep a lamp on. Just in case.
For when you want to keep a pen nearby
Peck & Peck by Bonnie Garmus
I keep finding lines I want to mark in this one. “Of course you have a calling. Be productive. Clean up after yourself. Make something. Love somebody. Don’t become a doctor if you hate the sight of blood.”
That last bit made me laugh. A little encouragement, a little common sense. This feels like a good companion to our conversation about saving words you want to come back to.
Come talk books with me this weekend
We’re finishing October with two more stops! You’ll find me at the Stangl Moon Market/Witch Walk in Flemington on Friday, October 30, from 5–10 PM, and Fairgrown Farm’s Halloween Fest in Pennington on Saturday, October 31, from 10 AM–1 PM.
Come browse the clue cards, find your next read, or tell me what you’ve been reading. Scooby-Doo sing-alongs are apparently also a VERY REAL possibility.
Wishing you good books and just the right amount of goosebumps,
Kimberly 👻
